CAN I USE MY CURRENT BED FRAME FOR MY ADJUSTABLE BED BASE?

An adjustable bed base caters to your preferences. This luxury enables you to tailor your bed’s specifications to achieve better sleep, which is its own kind of treasure. If you are investing in an adjustable bed base but don’t know what frame you need, you’re in luck. Here’s everything you need to know about getting the right bed frame for your adjustable base:

What is an adjustable bed base?

An adjustable bed base is a mattress foundation you can control to adjust to various sleep positions and preferences.

Many adjustable beds offer adjustable heights, customizable elevations, massage capabilities, and other advanced features that provide convenience and personalization, like wireless remotes, USB charging ports, and preset positions. Benefits of adjustable bed bases include:

  • Elevation control

  • Easy mobility

  • Massage capabilities

  • Acid reflux prevention

  • Reduced snoring

  • Reduced sleep apnea

  • Alleviated back pain

Now that you know what an adjustable bed base is, you may be wondering what kind of bed frame you need for it. Here's our guide to finding the right frame.

Can I use any bed frame for an adjustable base?

You can use any flat, solid surface for your adjustable bed base. As long as your adjustable bed base can lay flat on it, it can function.

Adjustable bases can also work on slats, but you must ensure you have the right amount of slats on your frame. Seven or more slats are usually enough. If your bed frame has fewer than seven slats, you need to remove the slats to use it with an adjustable base.

Can I use a platform bed for an adjustable base?

The answer is maybe. However, we advise not using a platform bed with an adjustable base. For your platform bed to be compatible with your adjustable base, your adjustable bed base must have a zero-clearance design.

If it does, you can lay it directly on your platform bed. If it has legs, you must remove them first. However, since not all adjustable bases have a zero clearance, you risk impeding functionality if they are not compatible. The design of platform beds also poses problems.

Even if your adjustable base is compatible, platform beds don’t usually have rails rising above the slats, so your adjustable base is more likely to slide around, and since platform beds are typically significantly higher than regular frames, you will have to scale your bed to climb onto the mattress.

While, sometimes, you can use an adjustable base with a platform bed, we strongly advise against using them together.

Do I need a bed frame for an adjustable base?

Maybe you don’t have a bed frame for your adjustable base. The great thing about adjustable bases is they can function as standalone beds, so a frame isn’t necessary.

In these situations, you can use a headboard and footboard to give the illusion of having a regular bed frame. Attach the headboard and footboard to the adjustable base using the headboard and footboard brackets and wrap a bed skirt around its legs to conceal the mechanical underside.

If you don’t have headboard and footboard brackets, many adjustable bases come with hardware that can help.
